Your dog's coat is an important indicator of their overall health. If it's shiny and sleek, that's a great sign that your pup is in peak form.
If your dog isn't getting the right balance of nutrients in their food, it can make their hair coarse and affect their skin quality. Check to make sure you're feeding your dog high-quality food that's rich in omega-6 fatty acids, which are essential for healthy hair.
Flaxseed oil and fish oil supplements are great for your dog's hair and skin, and you can find them in your local pet store. Make sure to incorporate them into your dog's diet slowly to prevent stomach issues. Horsetail and spirulina can also help, but check with your vet before giving your dog these herbal supplements.
Most dogs need to be bathed at least once a month for optimal coat health. Some need weekly baths. Just make sure not to bathe your dog too often, as this can strip away natural oils that help keep their fur shiny. And don't forget to brush them regularly. Not only does brushing get rid of dead hair, it also increases production of healthy skin oils.
An oatmeal bath is a great (and cheap) way to soothe and moisturize your dog's skin. Just add finely ground oatmeal to a big tub of warm water, stir, then let your pup soak for as long they want! They'll emerge with soft skin, a silkier coat...and they may smell a little like oatmeal. :)
Keeping your dog hydrated is another important way to make sure their coat stays shiny. Have you seen our EZ-Use Dog Water Bottle? It clips easily to your belt, is super lightweight, and has a convenient flip-open mechanism. It's a great way to make sure you always have water for your thirsty pooch. Check it out here.
